Bathroom Remodeling with Safety in Mind Ease of Use

The first step before you decide which one of the new bathroom designs you would like to use, would be to discuss the needs with the person for whom you are remodeling a bathroom for.  Since the bathroom remodel design is intended for them, you want to be sure you have an understanding of and are meeting their needs with any of the bathroom design ideas you come up with.  Each different type of disability has special needs and requirements in order to have a remodeled bathroom that is accommodating.

Receiving input from that individual’s doctor and/or physical therapist will also help determine which bathroom remodeling ideas will be most useful and practical.  They can give you advice on which disability assistance needs to focus on when you design your bathroom.  Another source to seek advice from is the home improvement contractors about how to make everything handicapped accessible when remodeling your bathroom.  The contractor should also be knowledgeable and experienced in ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines.  The goal of gathering all this bathroom remodel design feedback is to ensure your bathroom remodeling ideas will meet the needs of the handicapped individual.  The bath renovations should give them the ability to have as much freedom as possible to move around and also the most amount of independence.

Installing the Proper Equipment for the Bathroom Remodeling

A bathroom remodeling project for disability reasons can be simple without a complete redo of installing new equipment that is handicapped accessible.  All of it will depend on what the individual’s specific needs are.  As an example, an easy item to install would be portable rails which don’t involve the need for a lot of tools.  Another simple item would be to apply a nonslip, clear coat of material to the floor than can provide safety against slips and falls.

However, if needed, you may have a more complex job on your hands should you need to install all new disability equipment throughout the entire bathroom.  For those who have limited mobility but are still able to get around, areas such as the shower, tub, or sink may not need to be completely renovated.

With all the simple bathroom ideas out there today, there are so many possibilities.  Having to build a disability bathroom is a challenge as it’s different from a typical bathroom remodel by home improvement contractors.  But with some planning, input from the right people, and staying within your budget, you can create an oasis for the handicapped individual.  And your bathroom remodeling project can bring that individual both the comfort and aesthetic appeal that they desire.

I have been working in and teaching Bathroom Design and Remodeling for over 25 years. I stumbled into it; a designer friend needed an assistant for a couple days. One day turned into 1 month, that then turned into 1 year...and the rest is history. Now I want to share my knowledge through this blog and hope you all can benefit from it :)
